  1. First, I really want to start with Frank how he has changed,he has basically been hypnotized he is like in a sendrom the war has affected him a lot and I have several reasons for this. Number one he knows that by helping the war he is `killing` people why I think that he is `killing people is that he is lets say giving the americans weapons to battle so I guess that it could be called `second` hand killing. and that is something that can stay in someone so long they can bring it to heaven. If you have read the Hunger Games series then you get a basic idea of this,Haymitch has survived the `hunger games` so he gets wealth and fame but he drinks a lot and why he drinks is so that he can `forget` what he has done in the `hunger games`(killing some people that are just as innocent as him). That is probably why Frank and Haymitch are related and almost in the same position.
Second, question about Frank and Hazel reconnecting is that they for one are family so they always should be together, for example:me and my brother Jonathan we like each other but sometimes he does these little things to me they affect me but the things he do don't matter that much because we are a family and he will have to repay me somehow one day so that does not affect me,we will always be together and the is the same as Frank and Hazel. My other thought about them is they are so called a `team` one is of in the war and one is at home scouting for enemy planes,Hazel watches and helps be watching and Frank is helping by fighting in the war so as you can see they sort of work as a `team` if they were fully working as a team then it would be like Hazel is winding up the old clock and Frank cleans the clock they are a great team in my opinion!!! That is how they are reconnecting so quickly!!!
The last but not least question is about the light in the sky and I have some weird thoughts about this, but first it is a kamikaze plane that is a suicide person inside of it(that is the answer now hee are my long thoughts about it). Why is the person doing that? Why do the Japanese feel so good about their country. Maybe it is because of their economy well then if that is it they are doing just great plus they have a smart country compared to use we are placed 24 out of 100 countries!!! That is what I think about these recent chapters!!!

    1. Matthew, interesting perspective to attribute Frank’s distancing himself from his family due to secondary guilt. It’s a valid point and probably occurred during times of war. Furthermore, you made a great connection between the two character’s struggles in this book and Hunger Games. I love how you tied in both books.

I agree family loyalty is what eventually drives Hazel and Frank to team up again. I like your metaphor of the clock and you personalizing their relationship to yours and your brother.

The part about the light in sky is exciting and the author did not divulge any details so the reader was left up to their imagination. I also thought maybe a kamikaze plane, additionally maybe a shooting star or a bomb.

I loved your detailed response Matthew! I agree with Mrs. M. that you made a great connection between Frank and Haymitch. Great job comparing between two books! It shows me how deep you were thinking about this. You furthered your deep thinking by comparing Hazel and Frank's relationship to you and your brother, and your metaphor with a clock. I'm very impressed! I can't wait to read more of your responses.

Great response Matthew. You are thinking deeply and bringing your past experiences to this new story which is advance thinking. Yes, family is one basic connection but the war and his involvement has "scarred" Frank and distanced him. The fire in the sky focuses them all back to the war and it seems that is all that Frank can think about at the present time.

    4. Matthew,
When you said "me and my brother Jonathan we like each other but sometimes he does these little things to me they affect me but the things he do don't matter that much because we are a family and he will have to repay me somehow one day so that does not affect me,we will always be together and the is the same as Frank and Hazel." I thought that was a really great example to use. I liked how you compared your own family to Hazel's family, it was a really great way to get the reader to understand your thoughts about the book. Great thinking!

  2. I think that Frank has changed a lot since the last time he saw his family. He used to play with Hazel all the time before he went to war. Frank never smoked cigarettes, he payed more attention to his family, and Frank was less “stiff” before he went to war.The event that reconnected the bond between Hazel and Frank was when Hazel “hooked” Frank by telling him about the fire in the sky, and when they went on their little adventure to find anything suspicious, Frank and Hazel became close again.I think the light in the sky was a sort of parachute holding a few ‘special’ kind of bombs. If the parachute dropped them then, then the bombs would have exploded then and there. Hazel and Frank found the bomb already on the ground. I am eager to read the next chapters.

    1. Anna, you’re right, Frank is very different. You provide a lot of evidence (eg, play with Hazel, never smoked, attentive to family, and less “stiff) from the chapter to support your answer.
I also think the reconnecting event was the fire in the sky and their adventure. You think the fire in the sky is a ‘special’ bomb. I wonder what a ‘special’ bomb is supposed to do? The book is getting suspenseful, it’s hard to put down.

Hi Anna, I like how you said Frank was "less stiff" before he went to war. What a great way to characterize him. I feel that now that he is 16 and has an almost grown-up responsibility, by being in the Young America Corps, he has this new found maturity. I think he is trying not to act like the kid he was before he left. But when Hazel tells him what she has seen, his contained, child-like curiosity came out. Personally, I think this demonstrates he is still a kid at heart. I am also eager to read the next chapters!

      Anna,
Your answer is supported with facts from the book and that is great. You are correct that Frank has changed. He has been influenced by his work toward the war effort. Hazel is a wonderful sister, friend and American. And her effort to be those things all appear to be "hooking" Frank back into his old self which isn't a bad thing. I have to say that I cheated and couldn't put the book down... I finished it this morning. It is an exciting book about a difficult time in American and world history.

  3. Frank has changed because he doesn’t play those “Silly” games with Hazel. Frank is 16 meaning he is starting to grow up. Some 16 year olds do play games but Frank is serious about what is happening and doesn’t think he has time to play. Yet there is still a little bit of old Frank. He still likes a little bit of adventure. When he and Hazel were going on the “adventure” to look for the red thing that dropped, Frank was leading the way like he had never gone away to help build things for the army. The moment that brought him and Hazel to connect is when they went looking for the red thing that dropped out of the sky. But that red thing was dangerous. I think that it was the bomb that Frank and Hazel saw. It was in the direction that the red thing dropped. So I think it’s the only thing that would make logical sense. It could have been something else but why I think it is the bomb is because ask the question, what else would it have been? I don’t think Sogoji put the bomb there with his radio.

      Quincy,
I agree that the "fire in the sky" is probably some type of bomb and that Sogoji is innocent. He is a scared person with little to no support and I think he and Hazel have a wonderful friendship.
Frank has "grown up" as you say, but is it really for the good? However the "fire in the sky" does bring Hazel and Frank back together.

  4. How Frank changed since he left is that he is definitely more man-like. Also, he was this funny, talkative guy, and now he’s this really serious person. At least until the event that caused him and Hazel to reconnect, which was when Hazel told him about the light in the sky. I thought it might have been a Japanese plane being shot down, but it was probably a bomb being blown up on accident. If it was a plane, then the light in the sky would’ve fallen all the way to the ground, but it didn’t. the bomb would have only fell, exploded, and what remained would have fell to the ground instead of a plane.

    1. Mateo what was really interesting about your response was that it was bomb I thought that it was a kamikaze plane but i have to say now I might change my mind about that!!!
      Good Job Mateo

  5. @Matthew I agree with you about how frank is second hand killing. Frank is making the weapons for the army to use to kill the Japanese. Frank used to be friends with a Japanese now he is TOTALLY against even knowing a Japanese name. I also agree with you although I never thought about how Haymitch drank alcohol because he wanted to forget about killing that many people. You don’t see him as an ideal person but he really has a warm heart, he didn't want to kill ANYONE. I don’t think him and Frank are alike because Frank is second hand killing and Haymitch didn't want to really kill anyone.
