Final Blog Post - End of Book Thoughts

Your journey with My Friend the Enemy has come to an end, I hope you enjoyed it. I want you to spend some time reflecting on the book. Think about the characters, the time period, the main events in the story, what did you enjoy most about the book? Was there anything you didn't like about the book? What did you think about the way the story ended? Was there anything you wish would have happened that didn't?

Please use specific details from the story to support your thinking. Be honest about your feelings and thinking, this is your time to reflect on your book.

Week 4 Question

Hazel is worried about Sogoji being discovered and wants to come up with a plan. Sogoji tells Hazel, "If they find, they find. It is shikatoganai." He explains it to mean that "Something must happen. Can't be helped." How is Sogoji so calm about his current situation when Hazel is not? Do you believe Sogoji's thinking to be true? Are there some things that can't be helped? How can you apply this to Jed 'missing in action.'

Week 3 Question

Frank finally comes home for Christmas, but Hazel notices that he has changed. War seems to have changed all of them. How has Frank changed since he left? What event caused him and Hazel to reconnect? What do you think the light in the sky was?

Week 2 Question

Hazel begins spending time with Sogoji and invites him to hang out with her again. She says "I wasn't sure about my reasons for making the invitation - friendship or Knowing the Enemy? - but when he smiled, it seemed like the right thing to do." Why do you think Hazel invited Sogoji to come to the hill again, to be friends or to keep an eye on the 'enemy?' Explain your thinking. What did she mean when she said it "seemed like the right thing to do?"
